Dolphins vs Bears Breakdown - Week 7

The Miami Dolphins enter their game against the Chicago Bears at a critical juncture of their season. At 2-3 with a winnable Jacksonville game upcoming, a road win would set them up to at least continue to compete for the division title. A loss would threaten the chance of the Patriots starting to run away with the division. The pressure is starting to build and Miami must start to execute consistently to keep pace. However, records are just the outcomes of games played on the field and dictated by matchups; let’s take a look at some keys to this one.

If there is one thing NFL history has hammered home to me, it's that the West Coast Offense is a winning system. Extraordinarily, the West Coast Offense (WCO) is now roughly 46 years old, has claimed multiple championships, and continues to be a viable and efficient offensive attack. Offensive formations come and go in the NFL (think Wildcat, or the Pistol), as teams both implement their concepts and as defenses find the keystone holding the system together. Due to the WCO's historical success, I first began to study its concepts and truly fell in love with its multi-faceted concept. The WCO is, in fact, my favorite base offense.

Knowing this, imagine my excitement when The Dolphins hired Joe Philbin. He was a seemingly up-and-coming offensive coordinator from Green Bay; a GB team that is almost synonymous with WCO in modern NFL timelines. Now, imagine my disappointment when I failed to see WCO concepts actually implemented? So, what exactly is a WCO and in what way did we not use some of its core concepts? Read on past the break to find out.

Miami Dolphins Horizontal Draft Board

Every franchise front office has many eyes scouring over every prospect as opinions are gathered from everyone who is organizationally involved in scouting. This includes scouts at several levels, coaches, and the general manager. Realistically, attempting to approximate a team’s draft board from the outside looking in is inaccurate by definition.  However, it doesn’t mean we won’t give it our best shot.  In an attempt to create a similar draft board to the one that the Miami Dolphins might have, Ian Wharton and I have combined our own grades based on Miami’s scheme fits and preferences to create a horizontal draft board.

This process aims to highlight some of the potential draft picks for the Miami Dolphins, while also displaying the complexities of arranging many opinions. Even with just two sets of eyes and preferences there can be considerable distance between evaluations. This does not mean that either is wrong or right, but opens a conversation about prospect traits as they project forward into the NFL.

Pre-Draft Rookie Visits

From the time the NFL Combine closes until Draft day, NFL teams are accorded the right to host a potential draftee at their facility. The ground rules are simple:

  1. There is no limit to how many potential draftees a team may interview.
  2. The team, however, is only allowed to arrange transport for 30 prospects.
  3. Local players are allowed to be timed, tested, interviewed and administered written tests.
  4. Transported prospects cannot be timed nor physically tested, but can be interviewed and administered written tests.

Along with these visits, teams have scouts and coaches across the country to interview prospects and attend prodays. Read on below to see which prospects the Miami Dolphins have shown interest in.

A Closer Look at Andrew Abramson

Andrew Abramson covers the Miami Dolphins for the Palm Beach Post. The 2013 season was his first on the beat for the team. He recently took some time to talk to us about his background, the job, and even a little bit about music.

Andrew, thanks for taking the time to speak with us.

You grew up in South Florida, were you a Dolphins fan growing up? Who were some of your favorite players and what are some of your most notable childhood football memories?
