It felt like forever, but the NFL season is finally back; and right out of the gate the Miami Dolphins face the long standing champions of the AFC East, the New England Patriots. The last time these two teams faced off in Miami, the Dolphins sealed the win with a great 4th quarter offensive drive and a CB who arrived three days prior making the game sealing interception. What should we expect this time around? What matchups should we be weary of, and which should we feel confident about? Read on past the break to find out.

Last Friday, Dolphins fans finally got the chance to see their beloved team, and were able gauge the appropriate amount of hope to have heading forward for the first time this year. Granted, it was one preseason game, and even then most of the starters played only 10 snaps. Most fans understand to not get too high or too low because of what happens in preseason games, but there are still things you can pull out of the tape. Past the break, I break down a few key plays from the opening drive that resulted in a touchdown.

If there is one thing NFL history has hammered home to me, it's that the West Coast Offense is a winning system. Extraordinarily, the West Coast Offense (WCO) is now roughly 46 years old, has claimed multiple championships, and continues to be a viable and efficient offensive attack. Offensive formations come and go in the NFL (think Wildcat, or the Pistol), as teams both implement their concepts and as defenses find the keystone holding the system together. Due to the WCO's historical success, I first began to study its concepts and truly fell in love with its multi-faceted concept. The WCO is, in fact, my favorite base offense.

Knowing this, imagine my excitement when The Dolphins hired Joe Philbin. He was a seemingly up-and-coming offensive coordinator from Green Bay; a GB team that is almost synonymous with WCO in modern NFL timelines. Now, imagine my disappointment when I failed to see WCO concepts actually implemented? So, what exactly is a WCO and in what way did we not use some of its core concepts? Read on past the break to find out.
